- Have you ever wondered how you can get rid of plastic bags or polystyrene trays which are so damaging for the environment?
- Do you think that so many plastic bags, wrappers and packaging is unnecessary and wasteful? There must be better options out there right?
- Would you like to reduce the amount of single use plastic that goes straight into your recycling bin or trash can?
- Looking to reduce the amount of food waste by keeping your fruit and veg fresher for longer?
- Are you looking for ecological and sustainable cloth produce bags that are reusable, hardwearing and look great?
We had the same anxieties as you and decided to come up with a solution: Locally and lovingly crafted jute fibre mesh produce bags that would last, do no harm and be fully compostable. After a lot of research, trying out different designs and testing in the field, we found the right materials here in Spain and set about production. We are really concerned about ethical production as well. We started making the bags in our own workshop and have a small network of local seamstresses to help us.
Well, that’s a bit about our background. We want to tell you a bit more about what we are doing to help you on your journey towards sustainable, healthy and mindful living.
Shopping that is…
Each single use plastic bag is used for just 12 minutes on average. Each of our jute produce bags equates to around 50 plastic bags less for each year you use it, assuming you use it about once a week. So let’s take a simple example. If you use 10 Verdonce bags, each year you’ll avoid using 500 plastic bags in your home. That’s a really easy way to contribute to the reduction of waste and tonnes of toxic products being released unnecessarily into the environment. According to figures published in the journal Science in 2015 between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year.
Agricultural experts and nutritionists agree that fresh produce is preserved better in jute mesh bags because, being made from natural fibres, they allow produce to breathe. This avoids your fruit and veggies “sweating” like they do when placed in plastic bags or polystyrene trays. You can preserve all the vitamins and goodness for longer and avoid the loss of aromas from coming into contact with unnatural materials.
We may be stating the obvious here! Even though you might not be charged for plastic bags, packaging or trays around your food, we can assure you that indirectly you are being charged. These costs are incurred by the shopkeeper or producer and so they are passed on to you. This makes prices higher or the quality lower for you the end consumer.
The good news is that more and more fruit shops and bulk stores discount a few pennies or cents if you take your own bags.
Better organized and less time consuming
When using our natural jute bags, often it is not necessary to take your shopping out of each bag to store your produce. You can put them in your fridge, pantry or kitchen cupboard directly as they avoid causing your food to rot like plastic bags do. At the same time you save on having to fold, tidy or otherwise stuff away those dozens of plastic bags you would normally end up with after a grocery shop. You’ll save space from all those plastic bags piling up and overflowing in your drawer or cupboards too. So here is one way that slow shopping can in fact be faster and certainly tidier.
