Motors of the world, agents of change and sources of wisdom for society. They give us the tools to improve our day to day. We learn together about different disciplines and we weave a network that allows us to grow. They build a fairer and more sustainable environment, avoiding endangering the health of the planet as well as the lives of future generations.
March is a month for awareness, a time when we look back to reflect on what the female world is accomplishing. We look with pride and admiration at the legacy of many women who have made a paradigm shift in the world real. Another way of living is possible, with respect, responsibility and values.
These are some of the women who inspire us to lead a more sustainable lifestyle:
Bea Johnson
Have you ever wondered who started the Zero Waste movement? Bea Johnson and her family have been reducing household waste for more than 13 years and supports the circular economy model. She has become a role model for thousands of people and entrepreneurs around the world who are fighting to solve the problem of waste.

Pioneer of the Zero waste movement, Bea Johnson.
Why does she inspire us? She has managed to reduce the annual waste from her household so much that it barely fills a mason jar. The positive and real impact she has had the planet centres on a simple recipe: the 5Rs. Reject, Reduce, Reuse, Rot (compost) and Recycle.
If you have not yet had chance to give this slow and conscious lifestyle a try, take a look at our Zero Waste Kitchen section. We want to help you lead a more sustainable life, offering you alternatives that will make you rethink many habits.
Anita Roddick
Maybe you have shopped at The Body Shop without knowing that its founder was a pioneer in promoting the concept of responsible business. It all started in England in 1976, when Anita wanted to break the rules by promoting social and environmental change. Her company was one of the first to prevent the ingredients in her products from being tested on animals.

Why does she inspire us? For being a faithful defender of the idea that economic benefits and ethical principles can be united in harmony. For empowering economically vulnerable communities and for promoting Fair Trade with developing countries.
We have read her books, seen her documentaries and we love to apply her 3 principles to our work: Promote innovation and creativity, put emotion in everything we do and highlight what makes us unique as a brand.
Greta Thunberg
It’s impossible not to have heard of her. Swedish environmental activist and leader of the Fridays for Future movement which she started in 2018. The movement has managed to expand across the globe, getting thousands of students to take to the streets every Friday. They demand greater involvement and action from governments in order to mitigate the effects that the climate crisis is having and will have on the entire planet.

Why does she inspire us? Because at only 16 years old, she managed to put herself in the spotlight and get her message across. Her straight talking and her harsh speech at the UN Climate Summit gave voice to future generations. This, along with many other appearances in the media, has awakened companies and governments forcing them to react and not look the other way. In reality it’s up to us all as citizens of the same habitat.
Ingrid Newkirk
Possibly the greatest defender of animal rights of all time. Founder of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the movement that fights against the intensive breeding of farm animals, the use of animals for scientific experiments, stealing their fur, or for any kind of entertainment. Most importantly of all, promoting their ethical treatment by considering animals as equal to human beings.

Why does she inspire us? As Ingrid defends, it is not only a question of food, it also matters how you shop, have fun and dress. Animal torture is present in daily decisions that endanger their life.
At Verdonce we are very proud to be a partner in the PETA Business Friends program and that all of our products are accredited as PeTA-Approved Vegan. We do not use any type of fabric or material of animal origin.
Marina López Domínguez
Nonconformist, fashion designer and sustainability activist. Marina is president of the Sustainable Fashion Association of Spain (AMSE), founded in 2015. It is the only association at the national level in Spain that has managed to become a benchmark in Europe. Currently there are more than 130 brands committed to the industry, prioritizing respect, solidarity among professionals who seek synergies and alliances to grow stronger.

Why does she inspire us? She is committed to end-to-end sustainable fashion. A model that struggles to bring the bulk of production back to Spain by avoiding outsourcing. Not only is this important for the environment and the reduction of the carbon footprint, but also for the amount of jobs that could be recovered.
We recommend her book, Sustainable Fashion. In this manual of basic concepts you will discover the incoherent model that is the fashion industry, as well as the environmental and human damage it is causing.
Past, present and future. Each of these women empower different sectors with a common goal: socio-environmental justice as a symbol of progress.
What about you – which women inspire you? We look forward to hearing from you in the comments below.
